Many people are familiar with the word “self-esteem”, defined as a confidence or satisfaction in oneself. This can range in feeling from high to low with a simple thought, activity, emotion or conversation. It is something that may be conscious in awareness for some - but not for others.
Oftentimes it stems from a deeply unconscious rooted belief system in our own value, or lack thereof. It shows up in how we think, feel and act on our best or worst days. It can get triggered from our family upbringing, cultural environment, or seeds of doubt planted by others that we water unknowingly by our continuous fears - that what has been projected upon us - may actually be true.
Now, take your self-esteem into “work”, defined as a place of employment where one is paid to perform tasks and duties. A foundation built on centuries of hierarchy, control and structure. A place that you might love to go or wake up every day dreading. Somewhere that can inspire your greatest creativity and accomplishments or feel like it is sucking the life out of you with no end in sight.
Then, add the monetary aspect which one receives in exchange for this effort and it only amps up the intensity of perceived self-worth and value. Whether you work for yourself or work for someone else, the financial survival instincts that kick in are just another layer of complexity involved in workplace dynamics.
